The clave is the simplest Cuban folk percussion instrument (idiophone) of African origin: two sticks made of solid wood, with the help of which the main rhythm of the ensemble is set. A musician playing the keyboard (usually a singer) holds one of the sticks in his hand in such a way that the palm forms a kind of resonator, and with the other stick he strikes rhythmic blows on the first, extracting clear high-pitched sounds. The clave can be used to perform various rhythmic patterns; However, it is mainly used to perform the rhythm of the same name clavé, which is known in several versions: clave guaguanco, clave sona, clave colombia, Brazilian clave, etc. Clavé is widely used in Cuban music, as well as in such styles of Latin American music as mambo, salsa, etc.
